Our training philosophyAll of our behaviour training and dog sport classes are taught using motivational methods. This involves helping dogs to do what they are asked by rewarding desirable and appropriate behaviour, rather than punishing them for doing the wrong thing.
Positive reinforcement encourages dogs to think about making good choices to get a reward, and we all know dogs are pretty smart! Training this way helps you have fun with your dog, and helps create a stronger bond based on mutual trust and respect. For many dogs, food is the primary motivator, however, each dog is unique and it is important to determine what it finds rewarding. Apart from food (and there are many different types of food) rewards include tug toys, balls, pats or even your voice. Skills are taught using a range of techniques including luring, shaping and capturing. We encourage the use of a clicker or marker word, to enhance your dog's ability to learn. |
Our groundsWe have nine acres of fenced land available for use by members. Our grounds are disability-friendly: there are no steps, gates are wide enough for wheelchairs and we have disabled parking and toilet facilities. We are located on the corner of Jerrabomberra Ave and Narrabundah Lane in Symonston, just behind Geoscience Australia.
As a not-for-profit organisation we are always looking for people to volunteer their time and skills to assist with minor maintenance and working bees. If you wish to contribute to the club please leave your contact details with the club office. |
Please refer to the Using the Club's Grounds brochure for more information.
